Research Interests
The major research interests are: 1) The study of the high incidence rate of Type 1 Diabetes in Sardinia; from epidemiological studies to experimenthal animal models with NOD mice. 2) The study of the high prevalence of Glucose-6-phosphate Dehydrogenase (G6PD) Deficiency in Sardinia and its consequences for human metabolism, in particular the protective effect of this enzymopathy against coronary artery diseases. 3) Study-population analysis of main risk factors for coronary artery diseases in the randomly selected population of Pula (Cagliari), including genetic analysis for mutations causing Cholesterol Ester Storage Diseases (CESD) with the analysis of the E8SJM mutation in exon 8 of the lysosomal acid lipase (LAL) gene.
